There are 2 reasons customers will decide to add a magnetic stripe to their blank plastic cards. One is for show. They simply want the look of a magnetic stripe but it will not perform any function. The second reason would be to encode the magnetic stripe with data so the card can be swiped using a POS system or other scanning software. Swipe cards are most popular with gift cards, security access passes, bank cards, and membership cards. A LoCo mag stripe is usually selected for gift cards and cards that are not scanned frequently. A HiCo mag stripe is more durable and often required when advanced security features are needed or for cards that are scanned frequently.
